How does one know what size to make the engagement ring without their partner being knowingly involved?
Just like Prince Charming had the chore of finding the glass slipper’s perfect fit, you too will undergo a similar process!
While we manage to remember our shoe and clothing size, there is a rare few of us out there who actually know our ring size. However, it is one of the most crucial details to consider when engagement ring shopping. Although it is perfectly acceptable (and much easier) to get your partner involved in the engagement ring process, there are a lot of us out there who want to achieve a surprise proposal.
Here at Diamonds on Richmond, one of the most frequently asked questions we receive is ‘How do I find out my partner’s ring size?’. So, we thought we’d let you in on our tips for how you can find out your partner’s ring size as accurately as possible, and how we can help. Steal one of her rings
In a perfect world, your partner would leave their ring from their ring finger on the bedside table so you can easily snatch it like the grinch, without them questioning where it went. However, this is usually unrealistic. What you can do, instead, is either find another one of their rings to bring in for us, where we can generally estimate the size of their ring finger. Even better, is if you are able to try on their ring to see where it reaches on your own finger. Alternately, you could sneak one of their rings away, to then press the ring into either a piece of clay or a bar of soap. This will supply a detailed impression of the sizing for us.
Worth noting is that each hand will be a slightly different size - the fingers on our dominant hand are usually half a size larger because it is used more. If able, try to steal a ring from their dominant hand! Also to consider, is wider bands acquiring a tighter fit than thinner bands, which is good to keep in mind when choosing one of their rings as a size guide. Lastly, make sure the ring you snatch isn’t so overly important to your partner that it causes an uproar if it goes “missing”!
Exception to the rule
Another great option is taking a photo of one of her rings by placing it down on a ruler and taking a photo from straight down. This way we can take a measurement of the inside diameter of the ring. It is important to note that you must remember to record down what finger the ring is worn on and on what hand, as well as how wide the ring is. This will give us a decent amount of information to work with when estimating the ring size!
Phone a friend/Ask the audience
If stuck, there is always the option of getting a helping hand from the friends of your partner. Plan a strategy for your partner’s married or engaged friends to pass around their rings for each other to try on - making sure your partner is involved. Then, have them analyse how the ring fits your partner.
Fake it ’til you make it
Buy a cheap(ish) pre-engagement ring as a test to determine the sizing and to see how it fits. This will benefit you both. Your partner will be swooning over your spontaneous show of romance whilst you sit back and rub your hands together, smirking.
